Financial Aid for Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

Learn about financial aid available for study abroad and exchange programs at UCSD.

Financial aid is available for most study-abroad and exchange programs, during both the summer and the regular academic year. Contact the Financial Aid Office if you have questions about eligibility.

• Education Abroad Program (EAP)

  The Education Abroad Program is a UC program, so you are a UC student and pay UC fees while in the program. The universitywide EAP office determines your costs, which will differ from the UCSD basic student budget. UCSD's Financial Aid Office adjusts your financial need and awards based on the cost of your program.

  • File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 2.
  • Make sure you apply for study abroad scholarships.
  • Check your award status online using the Financial Aid tool.
  • UC's EAP Office in Santa Barbara (not UCSD) disburses your award, depositing it into your personal bank account if you have enrolled in direct deposit.
  • If you're attending a summer EAP program, follow the instructions and note the deadlines for summer session aid.

• Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP)

  Opportunities Abroad Programs (OAP) are non-UC programs, but you may still qualify for financial aid through UCSD's Financial Aid Office. The sponsoring institution determines your costs, which differ from the UCSD basic student budget. UCSD's Financial Aid Office adjusts your financial need and awards based on the cost of your program.

  Financial aid may also be available through your sponsoring institution, but you cannot receive aid through both UCSD and the sponsoring institution at the same time.

  • File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 2.
  • Make sure you apply for study abroad scholarships.
  • If you don't apply for aid through the institution sponsoring your OAP program, UCSD's Financial Aid Office will determine your awards eligibility; check your award status online using the Financial Aid tool.
  • UCSD's Financial Aid Office disburses funds to your UCSD student account.
  • If you're attending a summer OAP program, follow the instructions and note the deadlines for summer session aid.
  • If you have outstanding student loans, learn how to defer them while you attend your OAP program.
  • Contact the Financial Aid Office for questions about eligibility.
  • Contact the Programs Abroad Office for information about OAP programs and costs.

• Exchange program with Dartmouth College

  John Muir College administers this exchange program, but Dartmouth's fees are greater than UCSD's. UCSD's Financial Aid Office will adjust your financial need and awards based on these increased costs.

• Exchange programs with Spelman College and Morehouse College

  Thurgood Marshall College administers these exchange programs, which have fees that are higher than UCSD's typical costs. UCSD's Financial Aid Office adjusts your financial need and awards based on these increased costs.

• Academic Internship Program (AIP)

  UCSD's AIP programs usually offer academic credit. Certain types of loans may be available through UCSD's Financial Aid Office if you're enrolled in at least 6 units per quarter.

• UCDC study-internship program

  UCDC is a UCSD program, so you enroll at UCSD and pay the same fees on the normal UCSD student budget. The cost of living in Washington, D.C. is higher, so UCSD's Financial Aid Office adjusts your financial need and awards based on the costs of the UCDC program.
