Web Search Engines & Directories

Web search engines use automated "spider" programs to collect information about Internet sites, and maintain large databases which you can then search. Use these for searching for very specific things, such as product names, people, organization or company names.

Each search engine uses a different method of collecting information about Internet sites, and each uses a different schedule for re-indexing sites, so no two results will be exactly the same. If you have a complex search, be sure to read the help screens available from each individual site.

Web directories are like Yellow Pages for the Internet. Use these for browsing to see what's available in large categories, such as "economic indicators," "museums" or "cultural anthropology ."
