How to Register or Re-Register a Student Organization

Find out how to form and register a student organization at UCSD.
Note: Returning organizations must renew their registration each academic year to be valid.

  1. Gather information.

    1. Complete these steps in preparation for registering your organization:
      1. Choose a name. See info (PDF) about using UCSD in your name and duplicate organization names.
      2. Determine whether your group is a graduate, undergraduate, or combined student organization. See About Student Organization Principal Members to help you decide.
      3. Select 4 to 8 currently registered UCSD students who will be principal members of the organization. You will need their e-mail addresses, and they will need to complete tasks (including taking the registration quiz in step 3) for your group to complete the registration process.
      4. Select an off-campus, permanent mailing address for summer correspondence.
      5. Determine the purpose and category of your organization. Check your specific registration category requirements for any applicable prerequisites, including type of community advisor, rosters, other documents, or special meetings.
      6. Find out if your organization needs a community advisor. (See criteria) If so, ask a staff, faculty, or community member who is not part of the Center for Student Involvement to complete and return the Community Advisor Signature Page to the CSI office.
      7. Develop or review your organization's constitution. Make sure it includes the required 6 elements. Renewing organizations may view their constitution during re-registration. See constitution guidelines (PDF).
  2. Complete the online registration process.

    1. Select one principal member to complete the online registration process (step 2b). That member will also send e-mail invitations to the other principal members so they can complete their part of the process.
    2. Complete the online registration process and submit relevant documents (if required for your category). You will need your personal ID number (PID) and personal access code (PAC) to log in.

      Note:
Any of the following may change your organization's status from ‘current' to ‘pending' until updated by your CSI advisor:

      • The number of principal members falls below the required minimum of four.
      • A new constitution has been uploaded.
      • Changes in ‘purpose of organization' and ‘category' can only be done by your CSI advisor.
  3. Take the online registration quiz.

    1. Review this page and the following questions and links to prepare for the quiz.
    2. Take the session quiz.
    3. You must answer 13 out of 15 questions correctly to pass. You can take the quiz again if you don't pass the first time.
    4. Even if you are a principal member of more than one group, complete only one registration session per academic year. You will be credited for all organizations that list you as a principal member. Note: All principal members must complete the online registration quiz.
    5. Recreation clubs only:
All of your principal members must complete the online registration quiz and one of your principal members must attend a registration session just for recreation clubs.

Rec Club Orientation dates for fall 2009.
All will be held in the Rec Conference Room, RIMAC 4th Floor.
      • Wednesday, Oct. 7, noon–1 p.m.
      • Wednesday, Oct. 14, 3–4 p.m.

  4. Receive your registration confirmation.

    1. When the following tasks have all been completed, you will receive an e-mail confirmation from your advisor at the Center for Student Involvement:
      • All online information is entered, including your constitution.
      • All principal members have accepted their invitations, completed all information, and electronically signed the Principal Member Agreement.
      • All principal members have taken the registration quiz.
      • Your community advisor signature page has been turned in (if applicable).
