How to Search for Off-Campus Housing

Find tips and helpful resources as you search for off-campus housing.

  1. Give yourself enough time.
    1. Keep in mind that although more rentals become available in the university area in June and September, more people are also searching for housing at this time.
    2. Begin your search 4 to 6 weeks prior to your move-in date, if possible.
    3. If you are interested in living in one of the large apartment complexes near the university, contact their leasing offices more than 6 weeks in advance, since they often have waiting lists.
  2. Decide what kind of housing you're looking for.
    1. Consider what you want in a property
    2. Compare each neighborhood's average rental rates (PDF).
    3. See a list of local apartment complexes (PDF) and a map (PDF).
  3. Prepare a tenant's resume.
    1. Bring a tenant's resume with you when you begin searching. It contains background information that landlords will want to know and shows them that you are a responsible tenant.
    2. Use this sample tenant resume (PDF) to help you prepare your own.
  4. Search the UCSD Off-Campus Housing listings.
    1. Find out how to view listings on Commuter Student Services' online tool. If you are a student, you will need to enter your PID and your name.
    2. Access Commuter Student Services' online listings.
    3. If you will be living with roommates, ask them to help you read the listings and make calls about properties.
Be sure to check back daily on the listings that interest you. Don't get discouraged if you don't find exactly what you want the first time around.
  5. Make use of other resources as you search for housing.
    1. Search through newspaper and Internet classified listings, such as:
    2. Many landlords post "for rent" signs on their properties. Watch for them as you drive through neighborhoods you'd like to live in.
    3. Let you friends and family know you are looking for a place to live. They may know someone who has a room or apartment for rent.
    4. If you need more help, post a message on Commuter Student Services' message board.
