Student Health Insurance 2008-2009

Read about the mandatory Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Health insurance is required for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as a condition of enrollment.

All students paying full registration fees to UCSD are automatically enrolled into the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

SHIP offers:

  • Coverage year-round and worldwide to registered UCSD students for a moderate premium and low annual deductible
  • Premiums that are automatically assessed as part of registration fees each quarter

Note: If your insurance plan does not meet the university's minimum requirements, you are required to have SHIP.

    Cost:

    • $283 per quarter ($849 annually)
    Benefits of SHIP include:

    If you have private health insurance that meets university requirements, you may qualify for a waiver of SHIP. See the Health Fee Waiver tool for details.

  • SHIP for graduate and professional students

    Cost:

    • $516 per quarter ($1,548 annually)

    Benefits of SHIP include:

  • Primary care

    Primary care is provided by Student Health Service (SHS), a full-service accredited facility with onsite access to:

    • Board-certified physicians
    • Certified nurse practitioners
    • Laboratory services
    • X-ray services
    • Pharmacy
    • When you are within a 100-mile radius of SHS, you must start your health care at SHS.
    • When you are outside the 100-mile radius of SHS, you may access care where it is available. However, your plan year deductible will increase in the absence of a referral or an emergency.

  •   Emergency services

    You may access emergency care where it is available, regardless of location or distance from UCSD.

    • If you require follow-up care after an emergency room visit:
      • Within a 100-mile radius of UCSD, a written referral from an SHS provider is required.
      • Outside the 100-mile radius of UCSD, no written referral is necessary. However, your plan year deductible will increase in the absence of a referral.
      • A referral from an emergency room doctor is not a valid referral.
