Types of UC Summer Session Financial Aid

Learn about the types of financial aid available to UCSD students enrolled in summer sessions at UCSD or other UC campuses.

Facts about summer financial aid:

• Summer Session funds are limited, so apply early.
• Aid is available for summer classes at UCSD or at other UC campuses.
• Enroll in all your summer courses and sessions before you apply for aid because UCSD processes your summer aid application only once.

Types of summer aid available:

• Grants

  • You're eligible for UCSD summer grants if:
    • You filed your FAFSA by March 2.
    • You have financial need after any Pell Grant or outside scholarships have been awarded to you for summer.
  • If you were awarded a Pell Grant but weren't enrolled full time or didn't attend for a full academic year, you may be eligible to use all or part of your remaining (residual) Pell Grant for Summer Session. The amount of eligibility depends on the number of Summer Session units you'll take.
  • If you're an EDS student, submit your application for EDS Summer Session financial aid (PDF) by May 1.  EDS Summer grants and loans may be available.

• Scholarships

  Be sure to apply for outside agency scholarships to help meet your Summer Session costs.

• Loans

  If you've filed your FAFSA by March 2, wait until the Financial Aid Office notifies you of your eligibility for grants before you make a decision about borrowing. Look into other types of financial aid before you apply for alternative or private loans.

  • If you haven't already borrowed your annual maximum, you can use federal Stafford loan funds for summer.
    • Plan ahead and reserve some of your Stafford loan for Summer, instead of borrowing up to the limit during the regular academic year.
    • If you advance a grade level, you may be eligible to borrow additional loan amounts for Summer.
    • Review the maximum limits allowed for undergraduate Stafford loans.
  • If you're a dependent student, your parents can apply for a Federal Parent Loan (PLUS loan).
  • Alternative or private loans can pay the portion of your costs not covered by other financial aid.
    • Keep in mind that lenders and loan programs are subject to change.
    • Browse the lists of approved lenders for alternative loans.
  • If you're an EDS student, submit your application for EDS Summer Session financial aid (PDF) by May 1. EDS Summer grants and loans may be available.
