Undergraduate Research Scholarships

The undergraduate research scholarship program recognizes and encourages undergraduate research. Scholarship funds help cover research project, educational, and living costs.

How to apply for the undergraduate research scholarships listed below:

  1. Download and print the Undergraduate Research Scholarship Application 2009-2010 (Word file or PDF) and see detailed eligibility and project requirements.

    Note: The Doris Howell scholarship requires a separate application form (Word file / PDF).

  2. Propose a research project that you will work on through this summer and the next academic year that is:
    • Above and beyond your normal course of study
    • Not a part of your Fall, Winter, or Spring 199 coursework (although the project may be part of Summer 199 coursework)
    • Either related or unrelated to your major, minor, or other coursework
  3. Submit the application and all required supporting documents to the Financial Aid Office no later than 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 6, 2009.

    Note: Submit one application to apply for all the scholarships listed below or submit separate application packages to propose more than one research project.

  4. In June, you'll receive an e-mail notice announcing whether or not you've been selected as a scholarship recipient.

Undergraduate research scholarships 2009-2010:

  • Amylin Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered from: 2009-2010 juniors and seniors majoring in biological sciences or bioengineering, who submit projects related to diabetes.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
  • Biological Sciences Eureka! Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered from: 2009-2010 juniors and seniors with a declared major in the Division of Biological Sciences.
    • Promotes engagement in basic and translational biology.
    • Offers research opportunities both at the UC San Diego campus and at research facilities on the San Diego Mesa.
    • Successful proposals will provide evidence that the scholarship will provide you with an opportunity to have a significant research experience.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,500
  • Chancellor's Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Any area of study
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
  • David Jay Gambee Memorial Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Preference for projects that:
      • Involve you as an active citizen in university governance, the local community, or national and international affairs
      • Lead to a heightened awareness of the relationship between the environment and society
      • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
  • David Marc Belkin Memorial Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Preference for special studies and projects in the general areas of environmental and ecological issues.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
  • Doris A. Howell Foundation Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Preference given to applications that study the prevention of disease (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cancer, etc.); consideration given to all proposals designed to improve the physical, mental, spiritual, and behavioral health and well-being of women.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
    • Application: Note that the Howell scholarship requires a separate application from the other research scholarships on this page.
  • Dynes/ Hellman Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Preference for special studies and projects in physics.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
    • You're encouraged to serve the community through voluntary activities or participation in programs related to the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
  • Julia Brown Research Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered from: 2009-2010 juniors and seniors with career objectives in health care-medicine, medical research, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, or public health. Preference given to students with extenuating circumstances or financial need.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,500
  • Mary Louise and Charlie Robins Endowed Scholarship

    • Project proposals considered: Preference given to proposals designed to pursue special studies and projects in marine sciences.
    • Award: One-year award, up to $3,000
