Center for Student Involvement: Student Organization Awards

Learn about the awards presented by the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) at its May Awards Banquet.

  • Alexis Montevirgen Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service

    The Alexis Montevirgen Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service is offered through a generous contribution by Alexis, a former UCSD student. His extensive involvement in student organizations, leadership, and community service while at UCSD exemplifies the purpose of this award.

    The student must be a UCSD graduating senior who has been involved with a UCSD-registered student organization.

    Selection Criteria:

    • Participation in student leadership positions at UCSD
    • Involvement in community service
    • Support and promotion of diversity/ multiculturalism
    • Support and promotion of tolerance among all people

    2008-2009 winner: Arundathi Gururajan

  • Triton Alumni Engagement Award

    This award has been made possible by the financial support of the Office of the Alumni Affairs. It is given to a registered student organization that has:

    • Created a significant impact on the UC San Diego community through alumni engagement
    • Created programs, events, activities, or other opportunities for alumni to engage in unique and meaningful ways with the campus
    • Created highly significant events and activities that emphasize opportunities for alumni to return to campus and interact with students

    2008-2009 winner: Alternative Breaks at UCSD

  • Chapin Cole & Melissa Higgins Lifelong Service Award: An Alternative Breaks Initiative

    This award is made available through a generous contribution by former UCSD students Chapin Cole and Melissa Higgins to promote lifelong service after completion of an Alternative Break experience, based on the following criteria:

    • Commitment to continue and promote the goals of Alternative Breaks
    • Desire to represent Alternative Breaks and the goals and mission in multiple arenas

    The recipient:

    • Must have attended an Alternative Break outside of the San Diego community organized through a registered UCSD student organization
    • Must commit to completing an original and innovative proposed project and submitting required progress reports and photos

    2008-2009 winner: Sara L. Sable

  • Community Service Program of the Year

    This award is presented to the student organization that best exemplifies outstanding community service based on the following criteria:

    • Benefit to the community
    • Benefit to individuals
    • Number of participants
    • Contact hours/ monetary contribution

    2008-2009 winner: Pre-Dental Society/ Student-Run Free Dental Clinics

  • Scholarship Promotion Program of the Year

    This award is given to the student organization that does the most outstanding job of promoting scholarship to its members based on the following criteria:

    • Program effectively promotes academic achievement

    2008-2009 winner: Chi Omega

  • Student Organization of the Year

    This award is given to the registered student organization that displays outstanding effort in all areas, in relation to its purpose, based on the following criteria:

    • Contributions to the University
    • Contributions to the community
    • Development of its members

    2008-2009 winner: Society of Civil & Structural Engineers

  • Team Effort of the Year

    This award is given to teams of two or more registered student organizations for the most outstanding, jointly sponsored program based on the following criteria:

    • Team initiative and enterprise
    • Enhancement of the campus/ community environment
    • Achievement of goals through cooperative effort
    • Recognition of individual contributions of the group

    2008-2009 winners: Health and Medical Professions Preparation Program (HMP3) & Pre-Dental Society/ Student-Run Free Dental Clinics

  • Student Organization Program of the Year

    This award is presented to the registered student organization for an outstanding program based on the following criteria:

    • Participation within the organization
    • Service to the University
    • Positive impact
    • Service to the community
    • Service to participants
    • Individual member development

    2008-2009 winner: Pre-Dental Society/ Student-Run Free Dental Clinics

  • Community Advisors of the Year

    This award recognizes outstanding service and contributions to student organizations.

    The recipient must be the official faculty/ staff/ community advisor of a UCSD registered student organization.

    2008-2009 winner: Dr. Irvin Silverstein, Pre-Dental Society advisor (also winner 2005-2008)
