Hate-Free Campus Campaign

Hate-Free Week 2009 UC San Diego's annual Hate-Free Campus Campaign features a week of events and activities designed to increase awareness of prejudice, hate, and intercultural relations on campus.

  • Conscious Comedy
    7 p.m.; Porter's Pub (free admission and refreshments!) (map)
    A Hate-Free Week tradition! Starring Shang and Shayma Tash with MC Mark Christopher Lawrence. Big comedy hits the stage, showing the humor in and elevating consciousness of current social ills and spills. Sponspored by Thurgood Marshall College and CAUSE.

Friday, April 17

  • National Day of Silence
    All-day presence and noon lunch; Library Walk
    5 p.m. Break the Silence; Price Center Forum
    (level 4, map)
    The Day of Silence is a national student-led day of action to raise awareness of the daily harassment experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies. This is a voluntary vow of silence that echoes the oppression caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name calling, and harassment. Contact Beta at bhampton@ucsd.edu.

Monday, April 20

  • Hate-Free Week Kickoff Reception
    11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; Cross-Cultural Center Art Space (Price Center East, level 2, map)
    Come to connect, build community, and enjoy the free Greek food! Join us for a preview of scheduled events throughout the week; historic displays and art from past campaigns; express yourself on our wall of prejudice, wall of hope, and bead station; and learn more about the Matthew Shepard Act, an expansion of federal Hate Crime law currently pending in congress. Sponsored by Intergroup Relations Program and Campus Community Centers.
  • Abdelwahab Meddeb: Islam and the Clash of Interpretations
    4 p.m.; Literature Building 155

    Following in the footsteps of his acclaimed work on Islamic fundamentalism, Meddeb will propose to go back to the Koranic tradition and examine specific passages that instruct believers on how to deal with non-Muslims, focusing on different interpretations. Sponsored by the Department of Literature, Intergroup Relations Program, and many others.

  • Hate/Bias Awareness Campaign

    Visit our headquarters table throughout the week, featuring information about Hate-Free Week events, and hate/bias resources and activities. Learn more about the Matthew Shepard Act, an expansion of federal hate crime law currently pending in Congress. Sponsored by Intergroup Relations Program.
  • Watch Your Language!
    3 p.m.; Cross-Cultural Center Conference Room
    (Price Center East, level 2, map)
    Join us for an interactive workshop about language where we discuss the power of slang and expressions when building community. When is it okay to say certain things and when is it not? Experience how "watching your language" plays a role in effective communication and leadership. Sponsored by Cross-Cultural Center and Express to Success Programs, esuccess@ucsd.edu.

  • Interfaith Spiritual Reflection

    Join a community of spiritual leaders from the Center for Ethics and Spirituality in a spiritual reflection for an end to hate. Members from various faiths will share song, spiritual wisdom from their traditions, silence, and prayer. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Spirituality.
  • "What Happy Faces Are Hiding: Talking About Depression"

    Persons with mental illness and emotional difficulties are often stigmatized and marginalized. Don't miss this life-changing presentation by Ross Szabo, author and national speaker, as he describes his journey with mental illness in college and how he learned to cope, recover, and thrive.   • Discovering History: Holocaust Survivors in San Diego

    Meet local Holocaust survivor Ms. Gussie Zaks, hear her personal story, and explore other survivors' testimony on the Visual History Archive. Sponsored by the Holocaust Living History Workshop.
  • Direct Democracy Tour with Bernard Dolan and Jared Paul

    Direct Democracy is a nation-wide performance tour and workshop series, featuring an accomplished pair of grassroots organizers and two of the most respected names on the national spoken-word circuit. This workshop gives you the opportunity to engage with these dynamic speakers and performers and the possibility of progressive change in our nation. Sponsored by The Loft and UC San Diego.
  • "Water," film and discussion
    7-9 p.m.; Cross-Cultural Center

    Join us for a screening of "Water" by Deepa Mehta, an Academy Award-nominated film that explores the plight of female widows in Varanasi, India, and highlights the discrimination and repression that they still face in some parts of the world. Sponsored by Coalition of South Asian Peoples (CSAP) and Cross-Cultural Center.

  • Not on Our Campus! Understanding Hate and Bias at UCSD
    2-3:30 p.m.; Price Center West Bear Room

    As leaders on campus, we must stand together to confront bias and improve the campus climate for the benefit of everyone. Through this highly interactive and engaging presentation, reflect on how bias affects us and impacts others, and learn to recognize and respond to bias incidents when they occur. Sponsored by Passport to Leadership and Intergroup Relations Program.
  • "A Class Apart," film and discussion
    4:30 p.m.; Cross-Cultural Center Comunidad
    (Price Center East, level 2, map)
    The first major film bringing to life the heroic post-World War II struggle of Mexican Americans against the Jim Crow-style discrimination targeted against them. The file raises important questions about inclusion, American identity, and equality before the law that are as resonant today as ever. Sponsored by the Community Law Project and Cesar Chavez Celebration Committee.
  • WOMYN of Color Against Sexual Violence and Exploitation
    5-7 p.m.; Cross-Cultural Center
    (Price Center East, level 2, map)
    This presentation and community initiative will focus on how sexual violence is tied to larger structures of violence — orientalism, colonialism, militarism, and racism — and how political organizing, grassroots efforts, and peer-based services can be used as powerful tools for radical transformation. Sponsored by the Cross-Cultural Center.

  • "Pedro" film screening

    Join us for "Pedro," a film about an HIV+ Cuban-American man from MTV's "Real World" and the stigma he faced. The film also encourages everyone to get tested for HIV and other STDs as part of the Get Yourself Tested (GYT) campaign. Sponsored by VOX (student organization), vox.ucsd@gmail.com.
  • Social Action Theatre Troupe presents: "Hate Speaking, Seriously Funny!"
    7 p.m.; Price Center East Ballroom
    (level 2, map)
    The UCSD Social Action Theatre Troupe performs a series of satirical skits that dramatize the impact of stereotypes and bias on individuals and on campus climate. Student actors also share their personal testimonials regarding hate and bias. Refreshments and a facilitated audience discussion will follow the performance. Sponsored by UCSD Express to Success Programs and Intergroup Relations Program.

  • What Are YOU Willing to Do to End the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict?
    7 p.m.; Price Center, John Muir Room

    Join us in a panel discussion with Palestinian and Israeli youth leaders. OneVoice aims to amplify the voice of the overwhelming but heretofore silent majority of moderates who wish for peace and prosperity; empowering them to demand accountability from elected representatives and work toward a 2-state solution guaranteeing an end to occupation and violence, and a viable, independent Palestinian state at peace with Israel. Sponsored by The Organization for Jewish and Muslim Awareness (student organization), and Intergroup Relations Program.
